The episode kicked off with Mulder arriving at a hospital to find Scully unconscious after suffering a seizure.

And it seems that the final episode in series 10, where the world had been struck down by a virus, was all in fact a dream Scully had while unconscious.

As fans hashed it out online, with some stunned the cliffhanger scene appeared to be just a vision, they were overjoyed by evil Cigarette Smoking Man made a very cool return.

One fan tweeted: “Well, that didn’t disappoint!! The first episode of the new season of @thexfiles was fab!! @GillianA and @davidduchovny as brilliant as ever. Felt like the old episodes did! Cannot wait for the rest of the season now.”

Another tweeted: “New series has been terrific so far @therealsteavis well worth investing the time to watch!”

A third commented: “Love The X Files being back!”

Sadly for fans, this is likely to be the last series of the show after Gillian confirmed she’d reached the end of the line with her character.

She said: “It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is.

Gillian has played Agent Dana Scully since 1993

“I’m finished, and that’s the end of that.

“It is time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is. I arrived at the decision before we did the previous six, but I was really curious.”

“I felt that the previous six was going to be it.

“It was dipping our toe back in again…and getting to play these wonderful characters again.

“I think as [series creator] Chris Carter has said himself, that short stack of episodes felt like we were learning how to walk again and that this season of 10 feels like the pace is up and we’re running.

“I wouldn’t necessarily have been happy if those six were how we said goodbye.

“There’s lots of things that I want to do in my life and in my career and it’s been an extraordinary opportunity and extraordinary character and I am hugely grateful.”
