Speaking to This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofiled, Gillian relented that Stella is “fascinated” by him but she doesn’t think there’s a sexual attraction between them.

She said: “Stella is a very sexual being. She is absolute distracted and fascinated by him.

“She has spent so much time getting into the mind of a sexual predator. By immersing herself she has gone into some dark places.

“He’s a very dark and twisted psychological predator.”

Phil added: “That’s what makes it so gripping” and Gillian replied: “There’s tension there… I won’t call it sexual but tension is there.”

Gillian, 48, said she loves her character because she is both manly while also being proud of being a woman.

She explained: “She’s so comfortable with herself. It’s a confidence and she’s obviously comfortable with her femininity, she’s masculine and feminine.

“I tend to hide from my femininity, I dress in all black and wear combat boots. She allowed me to embrace that aspect of myself and be more feminine.”

The Fall airs tonight at 9pm on BBC2.
